WEEKEND SCHEDULE & WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS All events take place at the Kendall Mountain Community Center unless otherwise noted. A VISUAL AND SPOKEN HISTORY OF ATS® Friday, Sept. 14th, 6:30 – 8 pm FatChanceBellyDance®, the creators of American Tribal Style® dance, ignited an entirely new genre of belly dance, and are responsible for being one of the influences of the very popular Tribal Fusion. This 1.5 hour lecture uses vintage photos and videos to take you through 30 years of ATS® and FCBD® history, from its roots through its evolution, to its current incarnation. DANCE & DRUM JAM / MEET & GREET Friday, Sept. 14th, 8 – 10 pm Join Wendy and your Caldera Tribal hostesses for a fun dance jam and some social time. BYOB and a drum if you have one, and let’s dance! ELEGANT ARMS & FANTASTIC FLOREOS Saturday, Sept. 15th, 10 am - Noon I know you want to be the best ATS® dancer you can be. How does that happen? Attention to detail, on top of good technique. When it comes to slow movements, it’s all about milking the gestures, learning to stretch them out to match the music. I offer you three parts of that. Hands, arms and transitions. Hands: I have broken down the floreo to the most minute details. Learn how to enjoy executing a floreo to its fullest, most expressive potential. Arms: Learn greater awareness of the arm posture, flexion and extension of elbows, wrists and hands. Arm Transition artistry: ATS® dancers are always asking about cues. Often we don’t have an obvious cue, it’s more of a transition. Learn an awareness of the paths your arms create in transition from one move to the next. With strong arm transitions you will be a strong dancer. THRILLING DRILLS FOR ZILLS Saturday, Sept. 15th, 1:30 – 3:30 pm Zills. So scary for so many dancers. Doesn’t have to be that way. Zills are actually really fun! And they are an integral part of ATS®! We’ll play with zills. With just wearing them. With making our hands pretty with them. With rhythms. And with rhythms and dancing. You’ll learn that zills can be fun and mind-bending. Useful to know the basic Longa pattern. We will look at Longa, Military, Alternating, Beledi, and various Moroccan patterns, while dancing to Levels 1, 2 and 3 steps. AUTUMN HAFLA Saturday, Sept. 15th, 7 – 9 pm Shop for unique and beautiful items with our vendors, savor light appetizers and drinks, and enjoy fabulous belly dance performances by workshop participants and Wendy herself! This event is open to the public and there is no cover! Performer applications are due by 7/1/15. If you or your dance troupe would like to perform at the hafla please register for the free "PERFORMER REQUEST" or email calderabellydance [at] gmail [dot] com for more information. AFTER PARTY Saturday, Sept. 15th, 9 pm - ??, Location TBD TRANSITIONS 2 Sunday, Sept. 16th, 10 am - Noon People often ask what the cue is for a step, when there isn't really a cue, but there is a transition. Learn to gracefully transition through some of the more complex steps in the ATS® vocabulary. Knowledge of the basic ATS® moves required: Basic knowledge of Taxeem, Body Wave, Torso Twist, Circle Step, Egyptian, Arabic, Pivot Bump and Shimmy required. Knowledge of the following will be helpful, as we will review the steps, but will spend more time drilling the transition than the step itself. Camel Step, Ribcage Rotation, Reverse Taxeem, Head Slide, Turkish Shimmy, ASWAAT, TSWAAT, Reach and Sit, Shoulder Shimmy/Hip Drop Combo, Arabic Hip Twist, Double and Single Bump, incl. Single Bump Half Turn Ghawazee Combo. PHRASING, SHAPES & MOVEMENT Sunday, Sept. 16th 1:30 – 3:30 pm Working together in small groups using the ATS® vocabulary on synchronization, as well as using the phrasing to create tension and release, first with slow music and steps, then with fast. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Wendy always had a desire to express herself artistically, which was frustrated until she found Carolena Nericcio and FatChanceBellyDance®. She started lessons after a lifelong desire to belly dance, and found her artistic home within the SF Bay Area ATS® community. Wendy performed with FatChanceBellyDance® for 14 years, and taught at the FCBD® studio for 12. She has had the pleasure and privilege of teaching both domestically and internationally for the past 11 years, and plans to continue as an independent teacher of ATS®. As a long standing member of FCBD® and as one of the teachers who had one on one teacher training, Wendy has a unique perspective on the history of American Tribal Style® Belly Dance. WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS Dress in stretchy layers of exercise clothing, or traditional ATS® class attire of a 25 yard skirt and choli. Bring a refillable water bottle, a notebook/pen and perhaps a yoga mat. Don’t forget your zils! Please arrive at least 15 minutes before each class to settle in. VENDING We will have a variety of vendors on site for your shopping pleasure! Vending hours will be: 9 am – 4:45 pm and 7 – 9 pm on Saturday and 9 am – 2 pm on Sunday. If you are interested in vending please email calderabellydance [at] gmail [dot] com for an application. Space is limited and will be filled on a first come first served basis. MEALS While Silverton does have a small grocery and many restaurants, offerings for those with special dietary needs can be limited. If you have food allergies or aversions we recommend you bring food with you and inquire about ingredients before ordering at local restaurants. Durango and Montrose both have great grocery shopping options, including several natural foods stores. We have provided a generous 1.5 hour lunch break for those preferring to have lunch in town. You may also bring a sack lunch and, weather permitting, enjoy it on one of the two large decks at Kendall, which are equipped with picnic tables and lounge chairs. LODGING & LOGISTICS Two airports are roughly equidistant from Silverton: the Durango La Plata County Airport (DRO) and the Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which are 62.3 and 60.25 miles from Silverton respectively. Airport shuttles can be arranged through Silverton Shuttle: 970-769-2259. Once you are in Silverton pretty much everything is within walking distance, so no car is necessary. With the exception of the Saturday night after party, all workshops, vending and the hafla will take place at Kendall Mountain Community Center. Classes, the meet & greet, and the hafla will be in the Grand Ballroom, which is a beautiful timber framed space with hardwoods floors, ample natural light and fantastic mountain views. KMCC is a short walk from Silverton’s downtown area, or if you prefer to drive, the facility also has a large lot with ample free parking. For more information about KMCC visit http://www.sanjuancountycolorado.us/kendall-mountain-rec-center.html The Grand Imperial Hotel is offering a 20% discount to Tribal Summit participants with the code TRIBAL18. Visit www.grandimperialhotel.com for more information. We are also working on lining up additional discounts for dancers – stay tuned! Private vacation homes can also be rented through VRBO, Airbnb or Silverton Property Management: www.silvertonpropertymanagement.com. HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT SILVERTON Silverton is a quaint and historic Victorian mining town located 50 miles north of Durango in the heart of Colorado's majestic San Juan Mountains. The town is a National Historic Landmark, and is surrounded by public lands, so opportunities for outdoor recreation including hiking, mountain biking, camping, jeeping, etc. abound. September is a wonderful time of year to view the fall colors. More information on Silverton area activities can be found on the Silverton Chamber of Commerce website: www.silvertoncolorado.org. Please note that Silverton sits an elevation of 9,318 feet above sea level and is accessible only via high mountain passes. While altitude sickness is not a problem for most visitors, you should be aware of its symptoms which include headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath. One of the best ways to avoid altitude sickness is to drink lots of water before you arrive and while you are here. Allowing a day or two to acclimate, eating light meals, reducing your alcohol intake and getting plenty of rest will also help. The weather in Colorado can be unpredictable. It can be very warm and sunny in September, or we may experience snow. Nighttime temperatures can vary by as much as 30 degrees from daytime highs. Your best bet is to be prepared for anything Mother Nature may dish out! Bring everything from tank tops to warmer layers and flip flops to closed toe shoes. REFUND POLICY Please note that workshop registration fees are non-refundable, however they are transferable. If you have registered and are unable to attend, it is your responsibility to sell your spot to another dancer. Please email calderabellydance [at] gmail [dot] com with your name and the name of the dancer who will be taking your place. Please note that registration is for the full weekend package only (not individual workshops) and packages may not be split between multiple dancers.
